It’s powered by solar panels and hydroturbines the power storage alone can fuel the house and studio for more than ten hours. “Finding the right property and raising the capital required has taken many years.”īut patience and persistence has paid off in the form of an energy-independent house and studio on the shores of a loch in the Scottish Highlands. “We wanted to immerse ourselves in nature, but still have access to the energy required to power our studio,” says Ali Calderwood, one-half of the duo. They approached a company based in Germany to source the equipment and expertise required to create a state-of-the-art studio using 100% renewable energy. The music duo Anima was influenced by the years they spent with native tribes in South America. Many are motivated by the peace of a remote existence. Others find pride in creating something new and unique. Some find the reward of a more independent and hands-on lifestyle. In return, however, people say that they discover a number of benefits. Moving off the grid isn’t a decision to be made lightly.
